7 Nutritional Supplements for Wellness

Today’s healthcare system is designed to fix something when it breaks. For instance, you break a leg and get a cast or you get a sinus infection and need an antibiotic. Our healthcare system works great for those types of issues but our health care system doesn’t work so well when your daily choices causes your body’s normal functioning to break down. When you develop Type 2 Diabetes by gaining weight, not exercising, and eating sugary foods, our health care system tries to fix this problem with medications instead of nutritional supplements and healthy lifestyle changes. While Type 2 Diabetes is one example of the problem, other issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, bowel disease and cancer are part of the same issue: our healthcare system doesn’t do a good job of preventing things from breaking. However, you can support your body’s ability to stay well by choosing appropriate nutritional supplements. Here is a list of 7 supplements that can help support your body’s ability to stay healthy.

1. Omega 3 Fatty Acids also known as fish oil. The specific types of omega 3 fatty acids you want to supplement are EPA and DHA. Omega 3 fatty acids help support healthy triglyceride levels and reduce inflammation in your joints and digestive system. Also, Omega 3 fatty acids support the health of your brain and eyes. As people age, they start to think about how they can maintain their memory, mobility, and vision. Omega 3 fatty acids supports all 3.  Not all Omega 3 fatty acids are the same. When purchasing Omega 3 fatty acids, make sure select a nutritional supplement that is free of heavy metals and uses fish that is sustainably sourced.
2. Coenyme Q10. Coenzyme Q10 is in every cell of your body and is necessary for properly maintaining the metabolic cycles that produce energy and power our muscles, organs, and brain.  Coenzyme Q10 is especially critical in maintaining heart health as most Coenzyme Q10 is found in heart muscle. Also, certain prescription medications known as Statin drugs can deplete your body of Coenzyme Q10, which can cause muscle cramps and fatigue.
3. Glucosamine. Glucosamine can help repair damaged and arthritic joints.  Glucosamine comes in two different forms: Glucosamine hydrochloride and Glucosamine sulfate. Glucosamine sulfate is preferred because the sulfate form may assimilate into the joints better. Glucosamine can also help support sports injuries, low back pain, and arthritis pain.
4. Vitamin C. There are so many things Vitamin C does for the body.  Vitamin C can help shorten the duration and reduce the severity of the common cold.  Vitamin C can also help support healthy blood vessels by enhancing the dilation of blood vessels.  Vitamin C is also an excellent antioxidant, which can help slow the aging process and repair cellular damage.

5. Calcium. Many people think of Calcium when they want to protect their bone health. They are absolutely correct to think of Calcium because calcium is essential for the growth and maintenance of bones and teeth. Calcium is also needed to help your muscles function properly. Calcium can also help your heart and blood vessel health but it is possible to get too much calcium.  A good rule of thumb is to get 1000mg-1200mg of Calcium per day. The 1000mg-1200mg can come from a combination of diet and supplements.
6. B Complex. If you are a physically active person, then you may need a good quality B complex vitamin to help repair cellular damage created by consuming more oxygen during your physical activities.  A good B complex may also help improve energy levels. Consider taking a b complex in the middle of the afternoon instead of a cup of coffee. You may have more energy without a potential caffeine crash. B complex can also help the appearance of your skin and nails.
7. Echinacea. Echinacea is actually an herb and not a vitamin.  Historically, Echinacea has been used to treat colds caused by viruses and bacteria.  One of the best times to take Echinacea is when you will be in an area where you are more likely to catch a cold.  These areas include airports and shopping malls.  Remember to start taking Echinacea a few days before your travel or go shopping in order to give the herb time to stimulate your immune system.
